General Anesthesia Service Instructions

General Anesthesia Services Instructions

Your child has been scheduled for dental surgery treatment under general anesthesia at your office.

What is General Anesthesia?

  • This is a very safe procedure that allows us to provide the best possible care for your child.
  • Your child will be completely unconscious, so they are pain free and unaware during their dental treatment.
  • Your child’s anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who is fully licensed and trained in all aspects of anesthesia.

Before the Appointment

  • We will contact you 1 week before and also 1 day before your appointment to confirm and give you the arrival time.
  • We will reschedule your appointment if we are unable to reach you on both occasions.
  • Please call us as soon as possible if your child is sick or you need to reschedule.
  • Your child should have nothing to eat or drink, including gum, lozenges or candy, for a minimum of 8 hours before the procedure. Breast feeding is allowed up to 4 hours before the procedure.
  • Under general anesthesia, it is possible for stomach contents to be inhaled into the lungs. This is a rare but serious complication that is preventable by fasting.
  • Arrange a ride if needed. Your ride must be immediately available during the procedure.
  • Arrange childcare for siblings so your child has your full attention.
  • Arrange for a second adult to be present to ensure a safe ride home.

Day of the Procedure

  • If you are late, please call our office. We may need to reschedule.
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany your child and remain during the procedure.
  • Bring all insurance cards (medical and dental).
  • Dress your child in 2-piece, loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid onesies and footed tights.
  • Bring a change of clothes.
  • Your child will go to sleep using a mask. Once asleep, an IV and breathing tube will be placed.
  • Ibuprofen will be administered via IV. The next dose may be given 6 hours later if needed. Tylenol may be given immediately.

After the Procedure

  • Nosebleeds may occur from the breathing tube but will stop before leaving.
  • Sore throats are common and may last up to 2 days.
  • Children may be irritable after anesthesia; this typically resolves within an hour.
  • Your child may eat once awake. Start with clear liquids, then soft foods.
  • Avoid crunchy or sticky foods.
  • Keep your child home from school and activities for the day.
  • Adult supervision is required before and after the procedure.
  • Minor gum bleeding is normal for 3–4 days. Brush gently but thoroughly.

Postoperative Emergencies

Postoperative emergencies are extremely rare. Call 911 if you notice:

  • Persistent, heavy nosebleeds not controlled with pressure
  • High fever, extreme lethargy, or inability to wake
  • Uncontrolled vomiting

It is our privilege to help you and your child with their dental care. Please call our office if you have questions.
