Dr. Carlos Dorantes, DDS, MS
Pediatric Dentist
Dr. Carlos Dorantes received his dental degree from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala and practiced in his hometown for three years, focusing mainly on children’s dentistry. In 1999, Dr. Dorantes moved to Birmingham and began his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama Dental School (UAB). UAB’s Pediatric Dental Residency is a challenging 3-year dental school and hospital-based program; this gave Dr. Dorantes the unique opportunity to practice at the world-renowned Children’s Hospital of Alabama.
When he was not busy with patients or academic work, Dr. Dorantes worked as a part-time medical interpreter at Children’s Hospital. This experience shaped him for years to come, and that strengthened his determination to always work with the undeserved. Dr. Dorantes successfully completed his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in June of 2002 and was invited to stay as a Fellow Faculty member for the Pediatric Dentistry Department at UAB.
After completing his Master’s degree from the University of Alabama, Dr. Dorantes moved to Yakima in the summer of 2003 to aid in the development of children’s dental services for the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. Two years later, in a joint venture with the University of Washington, Dr. Dorantes helped to pioneer one of the first Rural Pediatric Dental Residency training programs in the nation. Finally, in December of 2008, Summitview Pediatric Dentistry opened its doors after several months of planning by Dr. Dorantes. We are very proud to be the only fully bilingual pediatric dental practice in central Washington.
Doctor Dorantes lives in Yakima with his wife Mei and their children, Benjamin and Camila. He enjoys teaching, hiking, and cooking for friends and family. He is also a published author in a peer-reviewed journal and is committed to education, prevention of dental disease, and access to care for children. As an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, he also enjoys attending meetings that enhance his training and introduce him to newer techniques.
El Doctor Dorantes nació y creció en la ciudad de Guatemala, habiéndose graduado del al Universidad Francisco Marroquín en 1996 con el titulo de Cirujano Dentista. Trabajó como dentista general y como catedrático durante tres años y en el verano de 1999, el Doctor Dorantes se muda a la ciudad de Birmingham en Alabama para iniciar sus estudios de post-grado en la especialidad de Odontología de niños. Durante cuatro años, el Doctor vivió y trabajo para la Universidad de Alabama, y al terminar sus estudios de post-grado y su maestría, el Doctor se mudó a la ciudad de Yakima, para empezar su empleo con la Clínica de Campesinos. Durante seis años, el Dr. Dorantes trabajó como especialista para la clínica de campesinos y al mismo tiempo estuvo encargado de el programa de maestría en odontología de niños que hasta el día de hoy funciona en la Clínica de Campesinos.
A finales del 2008, el Dr. Dorantes decide empezar su practica privada y así nace la clínica de Summitview Pediatric Dentistry. Estamos muy orgullosos de ser una de las pocas clínicas del Valle de Yakima que es completamente bilingüe desde sus inicios y lo seguirá siendo por siempre. Durante más de 17 años hemos brindado servicios de alta calidad a miles de niños del Valle de Yakima y somos uno de los proveedores de anestesia general mas reconocidos en el Valle.
El Doctor Dorantes vive en Yakima con su familia y degusta de la excelente comida Mexicana que afortunadamente abunda en el area. Sus hobbies incluyen las caminatas, la cocina y en ocaciones los deportes de invierno.
Dr. Mary Newman, MD
Anesthesiologist
Dr. Mary Newman, MD, is a board-certified, American-trained anesthesiologist with more than 35 years of experience as a physician. She has been a specialist in pediatric dental anesthesia for 9 years. Dr. Newman started her career as a board-certified pediatrician and then trained as an anesthesiologist in a second residency. This combination makes her particularly well qualified to care for pediatric patients.
Dr. Newman’s work experience includes general anesthesia practice at a large tertiary care hospital in Kentucky, ambulatory anesthesia practice at a surgery center in Yakima, and office-based anesthesia practice in Washington. She also served as medical director for Yakima Ambulatory Surgery Center in Yakima for 15 years.
Dr. Newman graduated from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois, in 1990. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Texas Southwest in Dallas in 1993. Her anesthesia residency was completed at Vanderbilt University in Nashville in 1997.

Dr. Newman lives in Selah with her husband and enjoys visits from her grown triplet children. She has lived in the Yakima area for 25 years and enjoys the mountains, ridges, and rivers. She loves spending time skiing, 4-wheeling, and floating the canyon.
